The other party can't just be content with the status quo. Separation signals that something has to be altered. With good intentions, couples can enter this process. But, real change can be hard. Sometimes it will require external assistance. It is not always easy or willing to carry it about or maintain it. Certain spouses do not have the patience sit and watch it occur. They get dissatisfied and start believing that, no matter the length of time they sit around, nothing is going to change to their liking and so it is an unnecessary waste of time waiting.
